Synopsis

A fabulous tale of love, war and magic unfolds as Jack Woods (Randy Quaid), a type-A businessman, comes to Ireland, ostensibly for some rest and relaxation. On his first day, Jack has a run in with local beauty Kathleen (Orla Brady), who catches him watching as she skinny-dips in a nearby pool. That night, while indulging in the local whiskey, he imagines seeing a Leprechaun! The next day, he skeptically follows what he believes to be an apparition only to find Muldoon (Colm Meaney) drowning in a small pool of water, the only thing that can kill the tiny people. He saves Muldoon, who tells his mortal friend he is in his debt "forever and a day." We soon find out that the Leprechauns primary task in Ireland is changing the seasons; secondarily they create mischief. Their archenemy is the Trooping Fairies, who make too much nature, too many tiny leaves, and too much work for those who change the seasons. Fighting, however, is not an option - the Grand Banshee (Whoopi Goldberg) has forbidden it.Despite warnings, Muldoon's son, Mickey, and his pals crash the Fairies' Grand Midsummer Ball disguised as regular guests. While there, Mickey falls in love with the beautiful Princess Jessica, the only child of King Boric and Queen Morag, leaders of the Fairies - the sworn enemy. Meanwhile, Kathleen and Jack have made amends and are slowly falling for one another. Kathleen however questions Jack's true intentions for being there and is concerned as to how long he'll stay. At a local pub, Barney, a Leprechaun friend of Mickey's, fights with Count Grogin, nephew to the Fairy leaders and suitor of Jessica. The Grand Banshee descends and as punishment makes Barney disappear. Vowing revenge, King Boric rallies his troops for war and, despite her pleas, sends Jessica off into seclusion, fearing the Grand Banshee will take her as well. Due to the impending battle, the weather begins to violently change. While the Leprechauns collect their army, Mickey sets off to save his love, trapped in a palatial undersea prison. Meanwhile the clash begins. As the battle rages on, a single black crow (the disguised Grand Banshee) flies ominously above. The weather continues to worsen, killing crops and changing the landscape.A romantic moment between Jack and Kathleen is interrupted when the Leprechauns attempt to recruit Jack to help instill discipline in their army. Kathleen, however, is angry when she discovers that Jack's original intention was to buy property for a big company back in the States, turning the beautiful town into "Disneyland." Jack explains that he no longer wants to do that and that he has quit his job.Mickey and Jessica travel to Jack's cottage for advice on how to stop the war, which they feel responsible for. He advises them to meet with the Grand Banshee herself. Unfortunately, the Grand Banshee explains she is powerless but warns that if the two sides don't end their battle, there will be "no more Ireland…or anywhere else."
