In an alcoholic haze at a local tavern, Mary (Golden Globe-nominee Rosanna Arquette, Pulp Fiction) meets the eccentric duo of Shane (Academy Award-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Paul Hogan, Crocodile Dundee) and Lloyd (Judge Reinhold, Beverly Hills Cop). Shane is a crude yet charismatic, wheelchair-bound flirt. Lloyd is his best friend. The two are reformed alcoholics traveling across country each with their own agendas. Lloyd, heart-broken, is on an obsessive mission to find his estranged wife. The jovial Shane, diagnosed with a terminal illness, is determined to make it home before he dies.
After meeting these two men, Maury realizes this unlikely pair may be her only hope of rescuing her son from her in-laws in Georgia. Having no other choice, she climbs on board their relic ambulance and an unusual journey ensues. Strangely enough, the trio becomes very close and emotional dependent on one another. They are soon joined by a fourth wander, Brad, who is a teenager on the run from his psychotic, abusive father.
Maury continues to call her son from the road, but is never allowed to speak to him. At the end of the emotional road trip, it is Shane’s death that brings new hope to all those who have traveled with him. Brad luckily finds a loving home and with the support of Lloyd, Maury finds the strength within herself to love in a way she thought she had lost forever. Finally, Maury is truly ready to move onward with her life finding the strength to fight back and reclaim her son as well as the life she once knew.
